About Budiman

Advisory rooted in care and practical understanding

We are a small practice dedicated to sitting alongside business owners — not in front of them — and helping things become a little clearer, one session at a time.

Our Story

Where Budiman began

Budiman was founded in Kuala Lumpur after years of watching small business owners navigate difficult decisions largely alone. Our founder, Azlan Razif, spent more than a decade working in corporate advisory before stepping away to focus on something he found more personally meaningful — helping the smaller operators who rarely have access to structured outside guidance.

The name Budiman — a Malay word carrying the sense of good character and thoughtful conduct — was chosen deliberately. It reflects the kind of advisory relationship we wanted to build: honest, careful, and never hurried.

We opened our doors in Jalan Sungai Besi in 2019 and have since worked with owners across retail, food service, personal care, small trades, and home-based ventures. Every engagement is different, and we try to approach each one with fresh eyes.

Our Mission

What we are here to do

Our purpose is simple: to be a steady, thoughtful presence for small business owners at the moments when an outside view would genuinely help. That might be when things feel muddled, when a decision is sitting heavily, or when an owner simply wants someone to think things through with.

We do not push owners toward any particular outcome. Our role is to help them see their situation more clearly, consider their options with care, and feel a little less alone with what they are carrying. A tidy outcome is worth more than a busy one.

"Good advice is offered gently, received freely, and never pressed."

— Azlan Razif, Founder

Our Standards

How we approach every engagement

Client confidentiality

All sessions and written materials are held in strict confidence. We do not share client information with any third party, and our records are stored securely.

Impartial counsel

We have no financial interest in any particular outcome for a client's business. Our advice is shaped only by what we genuinely believe would serve them well.

Continuing development

Our advisors stay current with Malaysian SME landscape developments, regulatory changes, and practical business management thinking.

Data care

We handle all client-provided data in line with Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010. Documents are not retained beyond the agreed engagement period without consent.

Clear agreements

Before any engagement begins, we set out clearly what is included, what is expected, and what the process looks like. No hidden costs, no scope creep.

Honest communication

We will not simply tell clients what they want to hear. Honest observations — offered respectfully — are more useful than comfortable ones.

A practice built for the realities of Malaysian small business

Small business ownership in Malaysia carries its own particular character. Relationships matter enormously — with suppliers, with regular customers, with the community around the business. Decisions rarely happen in isolation from family considerations, cash flow pressures, or the expectations of those closest to the owner. At Budiman, we understand these layers.

Our advisory work draws on practical knowledge of the challenges facing small operators in the Klang Valley and beyond: the difficulty of raising prices without losing loyal customers, the strain of managing staff in a tight labour market, the question of when and whether to expand. These are not abstract business problems. They are the daily concerns of the people we work with, and we take them seriously.

We work across retail, F&B, personal care services, home-based ventures, and small professional practices. We do not specialise in a single sector because we have found that the underlying challenges of small business ownership — clarity, capacity, customer care, and sustainable income — tend to cross sector lines. What changes is the context, and we pay careful attention to that context in every engagement.

Our sessions are available in English and Bahasa Malaysia. We are located in Jalan Sungai Besi and offer both in-person and remote advisory sessions for clients elsewhere in Malaysia.
