What owners say after working with us
A selection of honest reflections from small business owners across Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia who have used our advisory programmes.

"I came in not sure what to expect. I had been running my kedai makan for six years and felt like I was always reacting, never planning. The Neat Start Review gave me a different way of looking at what I was doing — just one session, but it was enough to settle a few things I'd been going back and forth on for months."

"The Smooth Folds advisory helped me finally sort out my pricing. I'd been charging the same rates for three years and was quietly uncomfortable about it. Azlan was very patient — we went through the numbers together and I left with a plan I could actually follow. The written action plan was genuinely useful."

"I have been on the Whole Linen Programme for eight months now. It is simply good to have someone who knows my business and checks in regularly. It is not dramatic — there is no transformation story — but things are running more steadily and I feel less like I am guessing on my own."

"I was a little sceptical about whether advisory would be practical for a small operation like mine. But the session was nothing like I imagined — it was more of a proper conversation. No lecturing, no generic advice. The written notes were the most useful thing. I still refer back to them."

"I appreciated that Azlan spoke in Bahasa Malaysia when I needed it. Some of the financial concepts are easier for me to think about in Malay, and he shifted naturally without making it feel awkward. The Smooth Folds programme covered more ground than I expected in two sessions."
Faridah Ismail

"Very straightforward from the first contact. I was clear about what the session would cover, what I would receive afterward, and what it would cost. That transparency is harder to find than it should be. The session itself was calm, which suited me — I do not respond well to high-pressure conversations."

A closer look at a few client journeys
Challenge
A home-based personal care business in Kajang had been operating for four years without adjusting its service prices. Costs had risen but the owner felt she could not increase rates without losing regular clients. She was working longer hours for the same monthly income.
What We Did
Through the Smooth Folds Advisory, we reviewed her full service list alongside actual costs and time spent. We looked at how her pricing compared to similar providers in the area. Together we worked out a modest, staged approach to adjusting her rates that she felt comfortable introducing to clients.
Outcome
Over the following three months she adjusted prices for five services. Client retention remained steady. Her net monthly income increased by approximately 22% without adding any extra hours. She noted that having the plan written down made it easier to follow through on something she had been avoiding.
"The written plan made all the difference. I had been thinking about this for two years and did nothing. Having it on paper, step by step, made it feel manageable."

Challenge
A small hardware retailer in Kepong was spending a significant portion of each week managing inventory and supplier follow-ups — work that fell entirely to the owner because there was no system in place. He felt stretched and could not identify a clear place to start fixing things.
What We Did
During a Neat Start Review, we mapped out where his time was actually going each week. The session surfaced three specific operational routines that were taking disproportionate effort relative to their value. We noted two straightforward changes and one longer-term adjustment in the written summary.
Outcome
He implemented the two immediate changes within a fortnight. His weekly inventory time reduced from roughly five hours to under two. He described feeling less overwhelmed, and went on to book the Smooth Folds Advisory to address supplier relationships more systematically.
"Sometimes you just need someone to look at what you're doing from outside and say — this part doesn't need to be this complicated."

Challenge
A stationery and gift shop owner in Bangsar was considering expanding to a second location. She had strong monthly sales but was uncertain whether the business could support the additional cost, and she had no one to think through the decision with objectively.
What We Did
On the Whole Linen Programme, we reviewed her financials over several months, discussed her capacity for additional management responsibility, and talked through what the decision was actually resting on. We did not tell her what to decide — we helped her understand what she was actually weighing.
Outcome
She decided to delay the second location by six months and focus on strengthening the operational side of her existing shop first. Twelve months later she expanded — from a steadier foundation, and with a clearer plan. She noted the process of deciding felt less stressful than any big decision she had made previously.
"I did not need someone to make the decision for me. I needed someone to help me see it clearly. That is exactly what happened."
